Billable hours shouldn't go to typing

A lawyer's day is built on text — memos, motions, engagement letters, discovery summaries, and the endless email that surrounds a matter. Typing all of it is slow, and the after-hours drafting eats into the same evenings the billing pressure already claims. Speaking a first draft is far faster than keying it, but generic dictation trips over case citations, Latin terms, and the names of parties and counsel.

Vowen is dictation tuned for legal work. It learns the terminology and proper nouns a matter runs on, types into whatever you're drafting in — Word, a PDF comment, a practice-management note, an email — and can run entirely on your computer, so privileged material doesn't have to leave your machine.

Built for how legal work actually gets written

Fast first drafts, confidential by default, fluent in legal language.

Privileged work can stay on-device

Vowen transcribes locally with on-device models by default, so a dictated memo about a client matter doesn't have to travel to anyone's cloud. Optional cloud AI is off until you turn it on with your own key.

Knows legal vocabulary and citations

Add the terms a brief is built from — 'voir dire', 'res judicata', 'plaintiff', statute and case names, opposing counsel — and Vowen keeps them so they come out right instead of being guessed at.

Types into any document or case system

Vowen writes wherever your cursor is — a Word brief, a PDF annotation, a Clio or NetDocuments field, an email. No integration to commission and nothing to copy and paste between systems.

Turns a spoken argument into clean prose

Optional AI cleanup removes the 'um's, fixes punctuation, and can shape a dictated argument into structured, paragraphed text ready to edit — not a wall of run-on speech.

Capture billable work in the moment

Dictate the post-call summary or the time-entry note right after a meeting, while the detail is fresh — so the record is accurate and the hour doesn't slip through unbilled.

No per-seat enterprise contract

Core dictation is free with a one-time Pro upgrade — a different model from the subscription-only legal dictation suites that bill per timekeeper every month.

An honest note on confidentiality

Vowen is general-purpose dictation software, not a legal-specific or certified product, and we don't offer a Business Associate Agreement or similar contractual assurance. Because transcription can run entirely on your device, privileged and confidential material doesn't have to be sent anywhere — but you remain responsible for protecting client confidences and privilege under your bar's rules of professional conduct. If you dictate sensitive matter information, confirm your setup meets your firm's policies and keep optional cloud AI features off unless they've been approved.

Common questions.

Still deciding? Ask us anything.

Is Vowen good legal dictation software for lawyers?
Yes — it's built for the writing-heavy parts of legal work: dictating briefs, correspondence, deposition summaries, and case notes into any document or case-management field, with a custom dictionary for legal terms and on-device transcription so privileged material can stay on your machine.
Will it get legal terms and citations right?
Add the Latin terms, statute and case names, and party and counsel names you use to Vowen's custom dictionary and it remembers them, so 'res judicata' or a specific case citation transcribes correctly instead of being guessed phonetically.
Does it work in Word and my case-management system?
Vowen types wherever your cursor is, so it works in Word, PDF annotations, and web-based practice-management fields like Clio or NetDocuments without a dedicated integration. If you can click into the field and type, you can dictate into it.
Is privileged client information kept confidential?
By default Vowen transcribes on-device, so what you dictate doesn't have to leave your computer. Cloud AI features are optional and only run if you enable them with your own API key. Vowen isn't a legal-specific certified product — see the confidentiality note above.
What does legal dictation with Vowen cost?
Core dictation is free, with a one-time Pro upgrade for the advanced features and no per-timekeeper subscription. See the pricing page for current details.
