Is Vowen an alternative to Wispr Flow?
Yes. Both put voice dictation everywhere on your computer, with different architectures. Wispr Flow is cloud-based and subscription-priced. Vowen runs speech models on your machine, or uses your own key for a cloud model, and is a one-time license. Vowen also adds voice shortcuts, file transcription and on-device speaker labels.
Does Vowen send audio to the cloud?
By default, no. Vowen transcribes locally with Parakeet or Whisper, and audio does not leave the device. Optional cloud features use your own API key. For AI cleanup, only the resulting text is sent to the model you choose, not the raw audio.
What does migrating from Wispr Flow look like?
Vowen covers dictation on both macOS and Windows, so the core surface is comparable. Custom vocabulary can be re-entered in a few minutes. Meeting notes work much like Flow's Notetaker. Voice shortcuts, built-in utilities and file transcription are new.
Does Vowen work without internet?
Yes for the core. Dictation, meeting transcription, speaker labels and custom vocabulary all run locally. AI cleanup and Command Mode need a language model: a cloud key, or a local one such as Ollama if you want them offline too.
