Past the meter

Working isn't the same as sounding good

Most mic tests stop at “the meter moves.” That tells you the microphone is alive, but not whether it sounds clear. A muffled pickup, a noisy room, or a mic placed too far away all still move the meter — and still ruin a call or a recording. Watch the level as you talk: it should respond quickly and sit in a healthy range without pinning to the top.

Once your mic is dialed in, it can do far more than meetings. With Vowen, the same microphone becomes a system-wide voice keyboard — speak in any app and clean, punctuated text lands where your cursor is.

Common questions.

Is this mic test really free?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser, with no signup and no download. Your audio is never recorded or uploaded — it stays on your device.
The meter isn't moving. What do I check?
Make sure you allowed microphone access when prompted, that the right input device is selected in your OS settings, and that any hardware mute switch on a headset is off. Then click Try again.
Does it work with headsets and external mics?
Yes. The test uses whichever microphone your browser has permission to use, including USB and Bluetooth headsets and external mics.
What's a good input level?
Aim for the meter to peak in the middle-to-upper range when you speak normally. If it's pinned at the top you may be clipping; if it barely moves, move closer or raise your input gain.
Why test my microphone?
A quick check before a call, recording, or dictation session confirms your mic works and is picking up clear sound — saving you from a meeting where no one can hear you.

Put that microphone to work.

Your mic works — now turn speech into clean text in any app with Vowen. Free tier that doesn't expire.
