Is Vowen a good TalkTastic alternative?
Yes, especially in three cases: you're on Windows (TalkTastic is Mac-only), you want your audio processed on-device instead of routed through cloud LLMs, or you want more than dictation — Vowen adds meeting notes, voice commands, file transcription, and a custom vocabulary, with a one-time price.
Is TalkTastic free?
TalkTastic is free while it's in beta, per its own FAQ, and it has stayed in beta since its 2024 launch with no finished pricing published. Vowen has a permanent free tier, with Pro as a one-time $49 purchase rather than a subscription.
Is TalkTastic private?
It's cloud-dependent by design: speech and optional screen snapshots are processed with third-party AI models (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini per its FAQ), and TalkTastic itself says end-to-end encryption is still being added. It does offer snapshot toggles and says data isn't used for training. Vowen's default is on-device transcription — audio doesn't have to leave your computer at all.
Does TalkTastic work on Windows?
No — TalkTastic is a macOS app requiring macOS 13.1 or later, with no Windows version announced. Vowen runs natively on both macOS and Windows with the same hotkey-to-text workflow.
